Difficult to Cure is the fifth Rainbow album from 1981 and marks a further commercialization of the band's sound. In an interview with the British music magazine Sounds (July 25, 1981), Blackmore openly declared his preference for Foreigner, and former singer Ronnie James Dio referred to this phase of Rainbow as "Foreigner Junior". Material for the album was started while Graham Bonnet was still in the band, and they got as far as the recording of I Surrender. Turner was recruited and sang over backings that had already been completed. In an interview with the British rock magazine Kerrang!, Turner explained that this was why he sang in higher pitches than he normally would (and still would later).
